One Good Move
When practicing breaking there are so many things to pay attention to, so many moves to try to conquer, and too many injuries to stay away from. It can be a bit overwhelming to any b-boy, especially the newbie hitting the linoleum in the first handful of months. Well, b-boys and b-girls, this is just one more thing to keep in mind. One good move is all you need. One perfect move rather.
Before you ask how one good move can possibly keep you afloat in the cipher or even more importantly pack enough arsenal to battle as a title-deserving b-boy, let me explain. One of the most talented b-boys I have ever met once gave me these words of wisdom, and though I didn't fully comprehend his statement then, I cherish it now.
"One good move is all you need," he said, while watching me miserably muscle over windmills that turned into exhausted attempts of flopping over onto strained wrists. Perhaps because I had already gotten 1990s he was encouraging me to stop while I was ahead. On the contrary, he was urging me to continue practicing, while tweaking my training methods only slightly.
Here's the rationale. Picture all of the amazing moves involved in breaking, namely power moves: swipes, backspins, 1990s, 2000s, shoulder spins, tracks, halos, headspins, flares, air flares, etc.; the list of move variances is seemingly endless. These moves are cyclical continuations of a set form, repeatedly executed to create one fluid motion. The continuation is not a move in and of itself, but rather an amplified sum of said form, tallied by repetition. The execution of these power moves are broken into the same exact move done over and over. Take the headspin for example; one 360 degree rotation accounts for the move in its entirety. Considering the extreme level of skill and ongoing competitive nature that flourishes amongst the art of b-boying, one headspin is not enough to impress most audiences or b-boys at the edge of the cipher. Numerous headspins, on the other hand, amount to a very impressive "move."
The continuation of a move is often what b-boys throw themselves into trying to tackle at the outset. Seldom do they really pace themselves as breaking down the technicalities and physics of such difficult moves and remember to master one before many. This is why it is so important to realize that before one can successfully perfect the continued cycling of a power move, he must first master and perfect simply one rotation.
When practicing windmills, first make sure to feel and comfortably allow your body to remember the perfect form of only one, stopping once you catch yourself after the rotation onto your stomach, over your hands. When learning the headspin, be sure to control your body well enough to simply reach the 360 degree mark, paying close attention to the balance of your upside down body, the angle of your neck, and the placement of your legs. If you prematurely throw yourself into forcing the repetition of a move you have not fully mastered, you are likely to gain sloppy habits and learn poor form.
When learning anything new, it is wise to break down the formula and be sure to fully understand the equation at its rawest form. As with nearly anything that is done right, learning a great foundation to breaking is sure to take time. The same time and care is crucial in truly mastering the extreme skills it takes to execute power moves. Such moves are amazing when performed in continuance; however the words of the wise (and incredibly talented) are some never to forget. One good move is all you need. Once you have perfected it, it is so easy to do it over and over and over.
